Beginnings & Vision

My fascination with dreams extends from those conscious hopeful dreams longing to be realized, to the mysterious subconscious dreams we create while sleeping. Both aspects of dreaming are powerful and can be profoundly life changing. Aspirational dreams propel us forward with hope, while remembered dreams from our sleep state are brimming with creative and therapeutic gifts. DREAM is a tribute to the benefits of dreams and dreaming, those rising with intentional awareness and those originating in the subconscious sleep state.

Intentional hopes and dreams are vital for survival and wellbeing, especially in the face of adversity. The sustaining power of our dreams propel us toward goals and help us find meaning and purpose in the most challenging times.

Dreams rising out of sleep, however, are outside our will. Born of an unconscious state, these dreams illuminate issues and feelings lying beneath the surface of our psyche. Unlocking their meanings through dream journaling or dream work can lead to revelation and deep self understanding.

Both types of dreams have been vital to me as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, as a musician, and in my personal life.  I have high regard for helping myself and others identify and strengthen conscious dreams of hope, which add meaning to life. Alternately, I have explored the nuances and polarities of vivid sleep state dreams, my own and my clients, using Gestalt dream analysis and group dreamwork. Deep layers of meaning resonate in dreams and dream fragments. The more I know of dreams, the more wonder I hold for them as a source of boundless expression: creatively, intuitively, and spiritually.

My vision for DREAM, is to invite you, the listener, along on a soothing restorative journey which embraces the awe and power of dreams.

Vancouver, BC jazz vocalist and songwriter, Nancy Newman shines across the borders of jazz, pop, and originals. Lush evocative vocals, heartfelt interpretation, and creative improvisation define Nancy’s performances. With a voice that is delectably nuanced, flowing, and fluid, Nancy sings with captivating honesty, in a style that is hers and hers alone.

DREAM is Nancy’s third album following ‘Palace of the Moon’ (originals) and ‘You Never Know’ (jazz covers). DREAM celebrates two types of dreams: conscious dreams which inspire hope, and sleep state dreams which lead to self revelation. It was inspired by Nancy’s lifelong fascination with her own dreams, and her therapeutic exploration of dreams as a Rehabilitation Counsellor. Joining her on this album are prominent Canadian jazz musicians Jennifer Scott/piano, Rene Worst/bass, Buff Allen/percussion, and Bill Buckingham/synth.
